Winter and Imbalances
It is common to see vata and kapha imbalances occurring during cold weather. These imbalances manifest as lack of focus, dryness, digestive issues, low immunity, lethargy, congestion and feelings of sadness.

When vata and kapha are balanced you have mental alertness and resolve, abundance of creative energy, a strong immune system, enthusiasm, endurance, emotional balance, and orderly functioning of all of the body's systems.

Follow these ayurvedic lifestyle and dietary tips to keep your vata and kapha in balance during cold weather:

Ayurvedic Lifestyle Tips for Winter
  1. Stay warm by wearing warm clothes made of natural fibers such as cotton and wool that also allow the skin to breathe.
  2. Exercise and stretch for 30 minutes daily to maintain good circulation.
  3. Apply oil on the feet and hands and dip in warm salt water for 10 minutes to improve circulation and relax your mind and body.
  4. Inhale hot vapors of natural essential oils like eucalyptus, tulsi (holy basil), lemon grass, mint, menthol to prevent nasal congestion. You can get these from any health food store or one of our practitioners.
  5. Apply natural lavender oil on the forehead and nose to reduce the winter blues.

Ayurvedic Dietary Tips for Winter
  1. Avoid cold or processed foods. Freshly prepared warm food enhances circulation and increases enzyme activity.
  2. If you can, you should fast once a week to detoxify the body. If fasting is not an option, then eating kitchari, the great digestive cleanser, one day a week serves to cleanse the digestive system too.
  3. Eat these food types:
    1. Nuts and dry fruits (in limited quantities – too much can increase kapha). Sesame seeds, Almonds, Cashews, Pistachio, Walnut, Hazel nuts, Dates, Apricots, Prunes and Raisins have necessary vitamins and natural oils and keep the body warm.
    2. Spices that aid in digestion - black pepper, garlic, onion, cumin, coriander, ginger, asafetida (hing) and mustard seeds. http://joyfulbelly.com has amazing recipes that use these spices.
    3. Vegetables that provide fiber and nutrition and are easy to digest such as drumsticks, spinach, amaranth, green banana, fenugreek leaves (methi) and mint.
    4. Sprouts – they contain fiber and proteins and are easy to digest. They provide abundant energy without the feeling of heaviness.
    5. Fruits rich in Vitamin C like gooseberry (amla), orange, lemon, tangerine help flush out the toxins from the body.

7 Ayurvedic tips to optimize your health during the holidays!

1.      Be sure to get plenty of rest.  Go to bed at a regular time each night, preferably before 10 p.m.  Avoid watching T.V, computer work, or using any other electronics at least 1 hour before bed.  You can read a light novel or spiritual book, meditate and/or do light yoga stretches before bed.

2.      Give yourself plenty of time to complete tasks.  Avoid excessive shopping and crowds this holiday!

3.      Take meals consisting of warm, moist food at regular times each day.

4.      Limit intake of caffeinated substances as they are detrimental to the nervous system.  Substitute herbal teas or chai instead.  Avoid alcohol as it is dehydrating and also causes disturbances of the mind, such as anxiety, depression and addiction.

5.      If you must travel make sure and take rest stops every 2-3 hours to stretch and have something to eat.  Be sure to take time to rest when you arrive at your destination.

6.   Say the mantra “Aum” ten times in the morning just before meditating.  This helps to ground you and get you ready for the day.

7.      Include these poses in your yoga practice as they help calm the mind: Vrksasana, Tadasana. Click to read detailed steps.

Holiday Churna - from JoyfulBelly.com

Servings: 25
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes

Spice up your life with an Ayurvedic spice blend. Spices not only add flavor and balance to your meal, but act as digestive aids as well. Spices have many medicinal properties, as illustrated by the saying, "Let your food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food"

Ayurvedic Notes:
Churnas and chutneys are blends of spices, herbs and/or fruits that include all six Ayurvedic tastes: sweet, pungent, salty, astringent, sour & bitter. Incorporating all six tastes balances the body and satisfies the palette. Each taste has its own physiological and emotional effect. When all six tastes aren't present, we tend to feel unsatisfied after a meal. Quite literally, there is something missing. This often leads to overeating, instinctively knowing a part of us is still unsatisfied.

Preparation:
How to make a Churna:

Mix spices together in a electric grinder, a spice mill or grind with a mortar & pestle.
Store in a glass jar.

Directions for use:

Gently roast spices over a low flame. Use approximately (to taste) one teaspoon of spice mixture per serving of vegetables, fish, poultry or meat. Sauté spices until the aroma is released (be careful not to burn). Add ghee, coconut oil or olive oil with 3x the amount of water and heat on medium. Add vegetables, mix lightly and sauté together or sauté the spice mixture in ghee/oil and drizzle on vegetables or grains. Add churnas to soups, stews and sauces as they're cooking or sprinkle over prepared vegetables or rice at the table. Add to popcorn with lots of ghee for a treat. Carry a small jar or packet with you and add them to food on the go and make all your meals healthier, more digestible and delicious.

Churnas are convenient, mouth-watering and nutritious!
